The Story Behind Silver Lining & Co: Why We’ll Always Choose Story First

Silver Lining & Co started with a simple idea: good stories deserve to be told well. Before starting the company, I spent years working as a television journalist and presenter, where storytelling was quite literally my day job. I loved the unpredictability of it, walking into an interview not quite knowing where the conversation would go, meeting people from completely different walks of life and finding the thread that made their story worth stopping and listening to.

When I eventually stepped away from television, I realised very quickly that I didn’t want to leave that part of the job behind. I still loved people. I still loved asking questions. I still loved finding the tiny grab in a 45-minute interview that somehow said everything. What I wanted was the freedom to tell those stories differently; with more time, more creativity and fewer constraints around what a story had to look or sound like. And somewhere in amongst all of that, Silver Lining & Co was born. What began with my background in journalism and broadcasting has grown into a Perth-based video production and creative company surrounded by an incredible network of camera operators, sound recordists, editors, designers, animators, photographers, composers and creatives who genuinely care about the work they make.

Over the years, we’ve worked across corporate video production, documentaries, brand films, podcasts, campaigns, interviews, social content and everything in between, but long-form storytelling will probably always be our happy place. We love a long shoot. We love a long interview. We love having enough time with someone that they eventually forget there’s a camera in the room and stop giving us the answer they think they’re supposed to give. That’s usually when the good stuff happens. Our journalism background means we’re naturally curious, and we’re not afraid to move away from the question sheet when someone says something interesting. We want to understand the people behind the business, the history behind the organisation and the reason somebody cares about what they do. Sometimes the best story isn’t the one we thought we were there to tell. Our job is to recognise that when it happens and have the experience, crew and creative flexibility to follow it. We’re also incredibly lucky to work with clients who trust that process; some of whom have been with us for years, and crews who bring their own expertise, ideas and ridiculous amounts of gear to every production. The finished film might have our company name attached to it, but there are always a lot of talented humans behind the camera making it happen.

And that’s why we wanted to start sharing more here. There is so much that happens between the first phone call and the final export that never makes it onto a website portfolio. There are brilliant client stories, beautiful locations, enormous shoot days, tiny crews doing incredible things, technical problem-solving, creative decisions, funny moments, lessons learned and plenty of controlled chaos along the way. This blog is our chance to pull back the curtain a little and celebrate all of it; our clients, our crew, the content we create and the people who trust us with their stories. We’ll share projects we’re proud of, behind-the-scenes moments, production insights, storytelling tips and probably a few things we’ve learned the hard way after many years working in media and production. Because despite how much the technology, platforms and way we consume content continues to change, the thing that drew me to journalism all those years ago is still the thing that drives Silver Lining & Co today: people connect with people. Give us a great human, a good conversation and enough time to really listen, and we’ll find the story.

So, welcome behind the scenes. We’ve got plenty to share.
